Revelation given to the prophets of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints says that the dead dwell on Earth as spirits until the
resurrection of everyone at the end of the Millennium that follows the Second
Coming. Then they take up residence to the
Telestial, Terrestrial, or Celestial Kingdoms, each referred to a level of
glory. It is said that we would kill ourselves to get into even the lowest
level of glory, but only the Celestial Kingdom is the eternal Heaven because
the others all fall short. Only those who are cast out of God’s light and glory
into Outer Darkness experience Hell of the eternal sort.
Before the resurrection of all, the dead exist in a mental
state created when their conscience is laid bare of all physical disorders and
self-deceits, forcing it to face its true selfishness or compassion. This is
reflected back upon the person. The compassionate find themselves in a pleasant
dream filled with love, hope, unity, and forgiveness. The selfish are plunged
into a soul-searing nightmare of fear, hate, cruelty, oppression, violence, deceit,
and ruthless competition. They remain trapped in their self-created hell of anxiety,
self-loathing, depression, and shame, until Christ judges that they have waited
long enough for his forgiveness. The worse you are the longer you wait. If accepted,
his compassion replaces their selfishness and they can forgive themselves, as
well as finally grow. If they reject it, they are denying the Holy Ghost, basically
spitting in God’s eye, and that is unforgivable. So he leaves them to their
misery and they will likely take it into Outer Darkness.
This state of mind follows the dead when they are resurrected.
Those who found their heaven will find any level of glory to be their paradise.
Those who couldn’t give up their selfishness will find any to be a hell. That’s
why suicide is so dangerous. You take that state of mind with you and even if
you were compassionate, you trap yourself in your own hell.
